This one may or may not be true, but it sures shows you that sometimes it takes a simple guy like Jerry to help the PhD guys understand life. A little rural town was showing up in the country's statistics as having the highest birth rate per resident. This phenomenon finally caught the attention of some sociologists at the state university and they sent a team to investigate. While the staff was unloading the gear they needed at the hotel, the project director went to the local coffee shop, bought a java, and sat down to relax. Jerry happened to pop in, and being the friendly guy that he is, sat near the researcher and started a conversation. The talk got around to the study, and the director asked Jerry if the townsfolk had any ideas why so many kids were being born. "Well," said Jerry, "for a few years now, a train comes through town every Saturday morning at 6 am and blows for the main crossing. It wakes everyone up, and, well, it's too late to go back to sleep, and it's too early to get up." |
