Jenny picked up the phone and dialed her friend Sue. When Sue answered it was obvious that she was very distraught.

"What's the matter Sue?"  Between sobs the following story came out.

Sue and Fred's German Shepherd had gotten loose and went next door. Sue did not notice right away and by the time she got outside, Sam (the dog) was walking back into the yard with the neighbour's rabbit in his mouth.

Sue was aghast. She took the rabbit from Sam and scolded him. But, what to do with the rabbit. Sue noticed that Mary was out, so she quickly cleaned up the rabbit and put it back in its cage.

About an hour later Mary came over just frantic. Sue already knew the rabbit was dead so she had prepared herself to be a good neighbour by consoling Mary. What happened next, though, she was not ready for.

"Mary, what's the matter?"

"Sue. I just got home and found our dead rabbit in its cage", Mary explained.

"Oh. no", Sue reply as she prepared to hug her neighbour.

Mary continued. "But, that's not possible. Ken and I and the kids woke up this morning and found him dead, so we had a burial service for him before the kids left for school."

I have wondered for years if this is based on a true story or is it just an urban legend. It seems plausible.
